Honoring the USA on Independence Day

Independence Day, better known as July Fourth, is a national holiday established to honor the founding of America. The holiday also commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. American Thinker interviewed a few patriots who have served their country, asking them what this holiday means to them, as well as how current events affect American values.

Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ) celebrates this holiday by reconnecting with family and country. For him, the most important American values are personal accountability and responsibility. Part of this country’s greatness is that anyone “can make something of themselves. You can aspire to do exceptional things, yet if you fail, you have the opportunity to build again. That is the magic of America.”

South Carolina and Arizona set for CWS championship series

South Carolina and Arizona set for CWS

OMAHA – They’ve spent the past 10 days or so warily eyeing each other in hotel elevators and hallways, but starting today, the baseball players from Arizona and South Carolina will really get to know each other.

Housed in the same hotel since the College World Series began, the Wildcats and Gamecocks haven’t played each other yet because they’ve been in opposite brackets in the eight-team event.

But each club won its bracket, and now they’re the only teams left. When the best-of-three championship series starts tonight, two-time defending champ Carolina will be trying to become the first team to win three in a row since 1970-74 when Southern California won five.

The Lesson of Alexander Hamilton

We take money for granted — most people can’t tell us which way George Washington is facing on the quarter. They can tell us that Ben Franklin is on the front of the hundred, but they can’t tell us that Independence Hall (where he helped draft the Constitution) is on the back.

One might think that as denominations get smaller and more common, the pictures on them would become more famous and well-known. The ten-dollar bill features Alexander Hamilton on the front. Since he was never a president himself, one wonders how many Americans could explain how he got on the note. A hint is on the back, where there is a picture of the U.S. Treasury. In short, Alexander Hamilton was the first secretary of the Treasury.

But it was how he handled that position that garnered him immortality on our money.
