Back in Action

Grand Strand Daily is back in action.

For the past year, Grand Strand Daily has been mostly quiet. This hiatus was mostly due to medical issues I have faced resulting in a heart attack and double bypass surgery. I have now recovered and am ready to get back into regular writing.

This election season looks to be different than normal with very few local primary contests on the June ballot, The governor, attorney general and state treasurer Republican primaries are hotly contested and will provide interest among voters.

The new Forward Party will contest some county council seats on November general election ballot, which may stir interest among voters.

Apart from the primaries and general election, there are important issues facing the citizens of Horry County.

The negative publicity surrounding the Horry County Police Department over the last year or more has prompted citizens to address county council and swarm social media with requests to allow voters to choose, in a referendum, whether to consolidate the county police with the Horry County Sheriff Department.

The Horry County Solid Waste Authority is planning further expansion projected to cost tens of millions of public dollars, at the Hwy 90 landfill site, while ignoring the direction in its county establishment ordinance, of 35 years ago, to find alternative means for trash disposal instead of burying everything next to Sterritt Swamp.

The need for new infrastructure, to serve the ever-increasing growth of the county, and how to pay for it, is an issue at the forefront of voters’ minds. Included in this is the question of new power generation and whether citizens should be charged for the cost of providing power to data centers which are popping up all over the state.

These and more will be issues to be dealt with at the local and state level of government.

Grand Strand Daily will be back reporting on these issues with fact based articles to allow citizens to participate in the discussion.
